It is fatal in 5–10% of cases, with a higher mortality rate in young children. Those who are not immunized or under immunized are at risk of the disease. Recent outbreaks of diphtheria in Nigeria, Guinea and neighbouring countries in 2023 have highlighted the urgent need for evidence-based clinical practice guidelines for the treatment of diphtheria. Given the sporadic nature of outbreaks, many clinicians in the affected regions have never managed acute diphtheria and its related complications. Recognizing the global increase in diphtheria outbreaks, WHO rapidly developed a new clinical management guideline for the disease. This webinar will provide information from experts on what is new and most relevant in these guidelines. Speakers: Welcome address: Dr Nedret Emiroglu, Director, Country Readiness Strengthening, WHO Recent diphtheria events leading to guideline development: Dr Steven Mcgloughlin, Technical Officer, WHE/WHO, Professor, Monash University Case presentation from West Africa Diphtheria Outbreak: Dr Salma Ali Suwaid, Head of Department of Paediatrics, Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital,Kano State, There have been some areas of progress since COVID-19 but this progress remains fragile, and some areas have declined, highlighting an urgent need for political commitment and increased resources. The Board makes four key recommendations to urgently strengthen global preparedness. In this webinar, key board members will discuss the report findings and what’s new in pandemic preparedness. This webinar will be conducted in English with live interpretation available in Arabic, French and Spanish. Additionally, AI-powered interpretation will be provided in Chinese, German, Hindi, Japanese, Portuguese and Russian. 01.01.1970 01:00:00 03.04.2024 14:28:54
Diphtheria is a contagious disease that is caused by toxin producing bacteria. Speakers: Welcome address: Dr Nedret Emiroglu, Director, Country Readiness Strengthening, WHO Recent diphtheria events leading to guideline development: Dr Steven Mcgloughlin, Technical Officer, WHE/WHO, Professor, Monash University Case presentation from West Africa Diphtheria Outbreak: Dr Salma Ali Suwaid, Head of Department of Paediatrics, Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital,Kano State, Nigeria Summary of clinical presentation of Diphtheria and recommendations from new WHO guideline : Dr Srinivas Murthy, Clinical Professor, Paediatric Critical Care and Infectious Diseases, University of British Columbia, Canada

16:: Strengthening One Health operations in countries

01.01.1970 01:00:00 06.07.2023 00:47:32
Strengthening One Health operations in countries for improved preparedness to emerging zoonotic diseases Approximately 75% of emerging infectious diseases have an animal origin. Taking a multisectoral, One Health approach is necessary to address not only emerging health threats at the human-animal-environment interface, such as zoonotic influenza, viral hemorrhagic fevers, diseases caused by coronaviruses including MERS and COVID-19, but also endemic and often neglected diseases which continues to have major impacts on health, livelihoods, and economies, and cannot be effectively addressed by one sector alone. The Tripartite organizations (the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, the World Health Organization, and the Organisation for Animal Health), having recently been joined by the United Nations Environment Programme, have worked together to support countries in developing their capacities in addressing zoonotic diseases in countries, by providing best practices, frameworks and tools improving their preparedness for such threats at the human-animal-environment interface. This webinar provides understanding of the approach proposed to countries as well as the available tools and how they are used in the 6 regions of WHO. Showcasing examples from national users, it will illustrate concrete and operational implementation of the One Health approach for improved preparedness to zoonotic diseases in countries. Speakers: Dr Sylvie Briand, Director, Epidemic and Pandemic Preparedness and Prevention, WHO Dr Stephane de la Rocque, Team lead, Human-Animal Interface team, WHO Dr Guillaume Belot, One Health Officer, Health Security Preparedness, WHO Dr Sithar Dorjee, Director General and Assistant Professor of Epidemiology, Khesar Gyalpo University of Medical Sciences of Bhutan Dr Stella Chungong, Director, Health Security Preparedness, WHO Dr Stacie Dunkle, One Health Field Epidemiology Strengthening, Department of Surveillance System, WHO Dr Isani Shan, NBW Catalyst, WHO Country Office Belize Dr Elsa Dibongue, Public Health Officer, Zoonoses Programme, Yaoundé-Cameroun Dr Supriya Bezbaruah, Team Lead, EPI-WIN Science and Knowledge Translation, WHO Dr Milena Bainduri, Department of Communicable Diseases, National Center for Disease Control and Public Health, Georgia

Chikungunya is a viral disease transmitted to humans through the bites of Aedes mosquitoes infected with the chikungunya virus. It has been identified in nearly 115 countries in all the continents except Antarctica. The most common symptom is an abrupt onset of fever, often accompanied by joint pain, sometimes very severe that usually lasts a few days but can persist for months or even years. The name “chikungunya” comes from the African Makonde language and means "bent over in pain." This Webinar drew attention to chikungunya disease with the focus on the current situation in the Americas and the response from WHO and PAHO. 21:: Managing Plague in the Field

01.01.1970 01:00:00 20.04.2023 00:30:44
Plague, a disease that can be transmitted from animals to humans, has been responsible for widespread pandemics throughout history, including the so-called Black Death that caused over 50 million deaths in Europe during the fourteenth century. It is a severe disease with a high mortality rate, and remains a threat. Cases of plague have been reported across the world except Oceania, and endemic countries are Democratic Republic of Congo, Madagascar and Peru. However, today it can be easily treated with antibiotics and the use of standard preventative measures. This webinar explores how plague is spread and how it can be managed through the One Health approach. Speakers: Dr Eric Berherat, Medical Officer, EPP, WHO Dr Minoarisoa Rajerison, Head of the Plague Unit, Institut Pasteur, Madagascar Dr Sandra Telfer, Population ecologist and plague expert, University of Aberdeen, UK For more information on EPI-WIN, please visit our website: https://www.who.int/teams/epi-win
