ECOWAS lifts sanctions on Niger as it seeks to retain three quitting members

ShanghaiEye魔都眼 The West African regional bloc ECOWAS announced on Saturday at a special summit partial lifting of sanctions on Niger as it seeks a new strategy to dissuade Niger, Burkina Faso and Mali from withdrawing from the political and economic union - a move that threatens regional integration.
The sanctions will be lifted with immediate effect, the president of the ECOWAS Commission, Omar Alieu Touray, said after the bloc’s meeting in Nigeria’s capital, Abuja, that aimed to address existential threats facing the region as well as implore the three nations to rescind their decision to quit.
ECOWAS should consider a change of strategy to persuade the three countries to restore democracy and remain in the alliance, its chairman, Nigerian President Bola Tinubu said on Saturday
ECOWAS imposed a series of sanctions on Niger after a coup in July 2023 led by General Abdoulrahmane Tchiani ousted president Mohamed Bazoum.
