Imagine a place where a small group of people wields enormous power and decides over your fate. With the snap of a finger they can make or break you. They decided whether you go into ‘Heaven’ or not… sounds like the Vatican, right? But could just as easily be Hollywood. Heaven in this case being one of the much desired roles on the big screen. A chance to get your breakthrough. To be someone.
There are older men — and women! — who get to decide, who makes it big and who doesn’t. Piss off the wrong person and they will break you. Stop your career in its tracks. But kiss the ass of the right person, and doors open for you. Imagine being put in this environnment as a young child or teenager. It’s the perfect breeding ground for pedophiles to groom their prey in.
Now of course not all Hollywood directors are predatory or vile. But a large enough number of them are, and historically have been, for it to be an issue. This has been a fact for a long time, it’s a badly hidden secret that’s been known for decades. Even a hundred years ago, there were scandals. There was a ‘casting couch’ and some of the girls (or boys) who ended up on it, were underaged.
