Fourth Sunday after Pentecost (16 June 2023; Happy Father's Day)

Sermon Text: 2 Cor 5:1-3
Although we talk about going to our heavenly Father often, talk about the intermediate period between death and the resurrection is not common. One way Paul speaks of it is how it is better to be with the Lord and away from suffering. Yet, having our spirit away from the body is the very definition of death. God designed human beings to both body and spirit. It is unnatural for us to be away from the body. So, St Paul also talks of the intermediate state (dwelling in heaven as spirit) as a kind of nakedness where the souls in heaven desire to be further clothed. We do not want to be apart from our bodies, we want our bodies to be clothed with immortality. Christ shows and wins for us just this as he dies and rises from the grave. Our resurrection will be like his, in our own flesh without hint of mortality. We will have everlasting life. The resurrection is what we truly hope for; however, whether we are here in the body, in heaven away from the body, or in resurrected flesh in the paradise to come, our heavenly Father will always be with us through faith.
