Heinrich Scheidemann (c. 1595-1663) was a north German organist, harpsichordist and composer. He was an important forerunner of Buxtehude and Bach. He studied with Sweelinck in Amsterdam from 1611-1614 and this is very evident in his music, especially the harpsichord pieces. I shall be recording some of his other music once I have completed 200 videos of service postludes.
This piece, the Englische Mascarada oder Judentanz dates from 1642 and was written in tablature. How anybody could read that to play from it is a mystery to me! It works equally well on organ or harpsichord despite the very obvious differences between the instruments, but probably shows the Sweelinck influence more on the organ.
