These verses are a prediction Jesus makes of the way he will die. They were spoken in response to some god-fearing gentiles who were seeking an audience with Jesu. In keeping with his instructions of only associating with Jews, he gave a prediction of how he will die. The gentiles heard it and understood what he meant, and it was, therefore, a stumbling block for them. Some examples of God-fearing people are given from scripture. Another interesting point is made in connection with Samuel's call from God. The point is made as to why it took three calls from God for Samuel to respond; it plays right into the trouble the Jews have in accepting Jesus as Messiah.
