SABC News Following months of power blackouts, Eskom announced on Monday that 800 MW was added to the grid, after Unit 1 at the Kusile power station
was returned to service, a month and a half ahead of schedule.
Despite the efforts to turn the fortunes of the power utility, escalating debt poses a threat to its survival and operational capacity.
Good evening. Welcome to Unfiltered. My name is Sizwe Mpofu-Walsh.
One of the main debtors are municipalities which owe 64 billion Rands to Eskom. In May this year, the National Treasury announced the Eskom Municipal Debt Relief Support programme to address the problem but five monts ago, only 38 out 257 Municipalities had applied for the intervention which comes to an end this month.
Tonight we ask: How does Eskom's Municipal debt impact service delivery?
Joining me for this discussion are: Ms Thembi Nkadimeng, Minister of the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs.
Eskom's National Spokesperson, Daphne Mokwena. And often litigating on behalf of the hundreds of residents at the receiving end of a challenged Eskom and incapacitated municipalities, is Public Law Attorney, Chantelle Gladwin-Wood.
