Forget the hip check, you can fail the mission in a variety of ways regardless. Unless you are well prepared, you are not taking this fish down.
it has much more HP than any monster before it, and even several after it. the biggest problem you will face is making it stay out of the water long enough to actually hit it.
Also, be smart and don't go at night, learn from my mistake. if the Plesioth is not annoying enough, the Cephalos make it more of a pain.
This was my third attempt after running the clock and not having enough food to keep my stamina high enough. Third time's the charm I guess...
