SoCal Sea Snail CATCH AND COOK
The amount of mistakes made in this video for foraging are astonishing. I didn’t wear the right shoes, under a cliff, harvested facing away from the ocean. At one point I lost my footing and completely wiped out on the rocks. IT HURT SO BAD!! Make sure you know the best practices when going foraging to stay safe.
I was super excited when I found the Kellet’s Whelk because they’re predators, I’ve always found predatory mollusks fascinating. Something about a slow-paced chase on prey is unlike watching anything else.
Kellet’s Whelks are not always in season. July 1st - March 15th is when you can harvest. They feed in filter feeders which can be dangerous to consume in the summer months so limit your intake on them.
The recipes used in this video are very simple. For the limpets, all I did was add salt and had them raw. Would HIGHLY RECOMMEND - it was so good.
For Turban Snails and Kellet’s Whelk, boil in salt water for 7-10 minutes and then enjoy in a butter dip. My butter dip did not come out good at all so here is a different recipe:
Recommend Butter Dip:

Rosemary
Thyme
Parsley
Microwave for 30 seconds.
