Ever since astronomy first emerged, humanity has contemplated populating distant worlds. Books and movies about it have been produced. However it looks like we're getting closer than ever to making this concept a reality.
Numerous candidates for Earth 2.0 have been studied by scientists, and several have been identified. How would it feel to live in Mercury's underground lava tubes or the clouds of Venus? Which planet will host the first colonies of humans? And how will our lives change after we move away from home? Venus is receiving some much-needed affection.
VERITAS, an orbiter, and DAVINCI+, an atmospheric probe, will both be launched by NASA by 2030 on a journey to Earth's scorchingly hot sister planet.
The two will end the space agency's protracted dry spell on Venus, which began with the 1989 launch of the Magellan radar-mapping orbiter, the last dedicated mission to the second planet from the sun.
Venus is also being targeted by other entities. For instance, the space agencies of Europe, India, and Russia are all researching Venus mission designs for a prospective launch in the following 10 to twenty years. Likewise in 2023, the California-based business Rocket Lab plans to launch a trip to the planet in search of life.
In fact, we might be seeing the commencement of a legitimate exploratory push for Venus.
Planetary scientist David Grinspoon, a member of the DAVINCI+ team and a steadfast supporter of more extensive research on Venus, said: "My sense is that people are going to be surprised by how interesting [Venus] is."
Because it's such a complicated, dynamic, and fascinating environment, Grinspoon, a scientist at the Planetary Science Institute, said in a report, "And if that is the case, then the results of the early missions will also feed a desire for more missions."
Venus had previously enjoyed public attention. From the 1960s to the mid-1980s, the Soviet Union often targeted the planet with its Venera and Vega programs, notching a number of exploration milestones along the way (regardless of a number of launch failures).
For instance, in October 1967, Venera 4 made history as the first spacecraft to send data back from another planet's atmosphere, revealing that Venus had an extremely heated surface and unexpectedly thick air. The first successful soft landing on a planet other than Earth was accomplished three years later by Venera 7.
The Venera 13 lander made the first-ever audio recordings on the surface of another planet in 1982, a feat that NASA's Perseverance rover recently replicated on Mars. Another off-Earth first was the successful deployment of balloon probes in the dense Venusian atmosphere during the Vega 1 and Vega 2 missions in the middle of the 1980s.
