Kyiv announced on Wednesday that, following days of grueling combat as part of its counteroffensive against Russia, Ukrainian soldiers have retaken the town of Urozhaine in the eastern Donetsk area.
In a video that the military of Kyiv released, soldiers raised Ukrainian flags close to a memorial to Soviet World War II veterans.
The Ukrainian Defense Forces Have Taken Control of Urozhaine and Are Consolidating Their Positions, according to Kovalov, Spokesperson for the Ukrainian Military's General Staff, who made the announcement on national television Wednesday morning.
Approximately sixty miles southwest of Donetsk, which is currently under Russian occupation, is the town of Urozhaine. It's close to Staromaiorske, a village that Ukrainian troops freed earlier this month.
Ukrainian Deputy Defense Minister Hanna reiterated Kovalov's jubilant Telegram announcement that Urozhaine had been freed and the offensive was still ongoing.
Along with the video, the military released a statement claiming that members of the 35th and 38th Separate Marine Brigades, in addition to other units of the Ukrainian Defense Forces, had participated in the recovery of Urozhaine
The situation for Russian forces within Urozhania has been tense for some time.
Kyiv's soldiers had been able to attack the settlement from numerous sides, and Russian soldiers and influential military bloggers had intimated that it was only a matter of time before Ukraine seized control of the village.
Russia is putting up a fierce fight, repositioning units and troops, and drawing on reserves in the vicinity of Marinka, a city in rubble that stood on the front lines when the invasion began.
Russia's massive defensive lines, fortified by thousands of mines and vast networks of trenches, have made Kyiv's soldiers advance on the battlefield very slow and difficult.
Ukraine has suffered catastrophic losses trying to penetrate that fortified position
If Ukraine is successful in retaking Urozhaine, it will show that they are making headway in their advance south toward the Sea of Azov.
Kyiv has made this region a top priority since penetrating it deeply would cut off Russia's land link between occupied Crimea and eastern Donetsk.
