On March 2nd, 1964, the first U-2 carrier landing took place! The CIA initiated Project Whale Tale in the middle of 1963 with the goal of modifying U-2s for carrier operation, however, the proposal of operating U-2s from carriers was first proposed in May 1957, just a year after the aircraft's clandestine premiere. In August 1963, carrier flight tests were under way. A U-2 was hoisted onto the carrier USS Kitty Hawk CV-63, in the darkness of midnight by a Navy crane. The Lockheed test pilot took off the following morning with a full fuel load and a 321-foot deck run as the ship sailed off the coast of California. Although the takeoff was quite successful, the attempted landing was not, according to CIA. They persisted nonetheless, and three U-2A types underwent upgrades by the US Navy. The U-2G made its first successful carrier landing on March 2, 1964. The aircraft performed a series of touch-and-go landings aboard the aircraft carrier USS Ranger CV-61. However, no U-2 model ever saw use in the US Navy.
