Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, teased investors with an artist's rendering of a $3.6 billion expansion of the business's flagship Nevada battery gigafactory last month. Musk said that Tesla would quadruple output and cut costs by using a small portion of the floor space currently devoted to the plant's current machinery to produce enough batteries to outfit 1.5 million electric vehicles annually.
What Musk skipped over was that in order to accomplish that enormous efficiency improvement, Tesla would have to get through a roadblock that has been frustrating the business for more than two years: finding a quicker, less expensive, and more environmentally friendly way to make EV electrodes. If Tesla could iron out the bugs in the new strategy and incorporate it with other cost-cutting strategies, the company might release a mass-market below $25,000 EV.
Recently, there have been some intriguing indications that some businesses are actually moving through with that strategy. Dry battery electrode, or DBE, is a novel technique that battery researchers claim Tesla is already utilizing for the anodes of some of its most recent batteries. Furthermore, two businesses claim to be beginning to use the more difficult procedure for producing cathodes.
The good news is that Tesla may halve the price of a Model Y battery by employing bigger cells and a novel method to dry-coat electrodes, saving more than 8% of the car's U.S. starting price, according to battery researchers with connections to the firm.
According to 12 sources acquainted with Tesla's new technology or close to the company, the bad news is that it is just halfway there.
The reason for this, according to the experts, is that the dry-coating method used to make the larger cells in Tesla's 4680 battery is so novel and unproven that the business is having difficulty scaling up manufacturing to the point where the significant cost savings begin to take effect.
One of the specialists familiar with Tesla claimed that "they simply aren't ready for mass production."
However, the progress Tesla has already achieved in reducing battery production costs over the previous two years should help increase profitability and widen its advantage over most of its competitors in the electric vehicle market.
Investors believe that Musk's projected advancements in battery price and performance are essential to Tesla's mission to usher in a period in which it can profitably sell an EV for around $25,000 and have a better chance of meeting its 2030 goals.
Making low-cost, high-performance battery packs is essential to creating affordable electric cars that can compete with their combustion-engine rivals on sticker costs because battery systems are typically the most expensive component of EVs.
