· 13.04.2024 · 14:00:04 ··· ··· Saturday ·· 6 (6) World Economic Forum
This week's top stories of the week include:

0:15 Earthquake insights from Japan – On 1 January 2024, a 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck Japan’s Noto peninsula. It killed 245 people, damaged more than 76,114 homes and caused up to $17.6 billion worth of damage. Amid these tragedies, Japan was praised for limiting the disaster’s impact. Thanks to quake-resilient buildings, long-term disaster preparedness and a rapid emergency response

2:13 This highway can charge e-trucks – Since 2019, Germany has been trialling special eHighways. They have overhead ‘catenary’ cables, like tram or train lines, which charge electric trucks through special receivers. Siemens built the eHighway with partners. Now German policy-makers are considering extending the cables over a stretch of motorway from Lübeck to Bremen

3:48 Data art can save indigenous culture – This AI-powered merging of data and art has generated 1,000 images. The Winds of Yawanawa is for sale as NFTs with proceeds going towards Yawanawa community projects such as a museum and school. They were co-created by Turkish AI artist Refik Anadol and the Yawanawa people of Brazil. The project began with ‘kênés’, Graphical representations of Yawanawa culture. Anadol used these images to train an AI model.

6:28 Making social media safer for women – Kara Alaimo researches the impact of social media on women. She says that the social media landscape is deteriorating and this is having knock-on effects in the real world. Social media is becoming increasingly hostile for women, with extremist misogyny now commonplace. This online violence translates to the real world, as shown by the rise of upsetting content and harassment targeting young women.
