Hazel Knutt's Muesli Bar. Sally spends a night in the mountains, and awakes to find all her silver spoons gone. Could it have anything to do with the old professor and his age-regression potions? T-Shirt, meanwhile, scares himself silly on a stormy night by listening to The Gory Story Hour on the radio, against T-Bag's wishes. This episode was originally broadcast on Tuesday, 31st January, 1989.
Every so often, we get one where the spoon (or crystal or number or whatever) is found early, but then lost - and this is such an episode. Keeps things interesting to shake the formula up a bit, I suppose. Things to look out for include what I think is a clever nod to the Monty Python spam sketch, T-Shirt taking the initiative but becoming a cropper, and Tallulah's magic finger getting... well, I won't spoil it. Also, in the back of my mind, I wonder whether Hazel's insistence on a "proper healthy breakfast" was a line inserted as a compromise for the preceding mass biscuit-eating on show. Either way, I really enjoyed this one.
There's a pretty obvious blunder around 15:55 as Sally and T-Shirt speak over each other, leading to a pause before T-Bag picks things up again in a way that no longer really makes sense. But such errors are few and very far between, and this is as good a point as any for me to offer the following opinion. Now, I love Georgina Hale and what she did with the Tabatha character. T-Shirt was sweet at his youngest and funny at his stroppy-teenager oldest. Holly and Penny were truly excellent, and while we didn't necessarily see the best of Polly and Tow-Ling, Debbie was the original and, to many, the best. It was also a real bonus to have Bishop Brennan turn up in various roles throughout the first series. But, when all said and done, taking everything including ages into account, I think that the series five regular line-up of Elizabeth Estensen, John Hasler and Kellie Bright marks the very peak of the show's casting. To me, it's just the perfect three-way dynamic. Agree or disagree? I realise that this may split a fair few T-Bag fans!
The guest parts in this one are played by Gillian Martell and John Bluthal, who both clocked up more T-Bag appearances. Gillian has credits in the likes of Oliver Twist, Mansfield Park, The Hound of the Baskervilles, The Mill on the Floss, and (even more highbrow) Grange Hill to her name, and would return later in 1989 for the T-Bag Christmas special. John, on the other hand, has a slightly bizarre IMDB entry (look it up if you get the chance) that takes in Q9, Kenny Everett, Sykes, some Carry On films, and loads more - but he's probably most recognised as Frank Pickle in The Vicar of Dibley.
Look out for the brief snippet of continuity at the end presented by Mark Granger. You'll notice that Scally is now very much a talking dog.
