On May 27th, 2020, a military aircraft from Israel suddenly hit the Golan Heights in Syria. An Israeli reconnaissance drone then visited the Syrian border that day to conduct surveillance, but the Russian laser weapon Peresvet shot down the drone over Syrian territory without giving it any prior notice. Russia delivered the Peresvet combat laser system in Syria after testing its Armata T-14 tank, and the Peresvet passed the test by shooting down the Israeli surveillance UAV. The Peresvet seems to be built around an infrared beam from a solid-state laser array that can be placed at a high intensity for hitting a target or at a low output to alert or disable a target's sensors. The Peresvet bears the name of a Tatar-fighting Russian Orthodox monk who lived around the 1300s. The US Navy's AN/SEQ-3 laser weapon system and the Russian laser have extremely similar appearances. Russian beam-particle weaponry was suspected by the Israeli side, but Israel then denied this and said that no such drone has ever been known to have been shot down in such an occurrence. Vladimir Putin disclosed the system in his address to the Federal Assembly on March 1, 2018.
