MYERS as a Family Name Meaning and Origin

This interesting name is one of the patronymic forms of the surname "Mayer", which originated in early medieval England and is found as Mayer, Myers, Meyers, Miers, etc. This surname is the occupational or "status name" of the mayor and is derived from Middle English and Old French "mair, maire". In France and Scotland, where the surname "Mair" is common, this title denoted various local petty officials. It is possible, therefore, that the surname was given to a citizen of some rank who held this office, and possibly as a nickname for someone who was ill-tempered or pompous. The record includes the following examples: a Trinian Myers who married Erin Wright in 1605 at St. Martin and St. Gregory's Church, York; a Trenyon Myers (same person, different spelling) baptized on 21 September 1610 at St. John's Church, Ousebridge, near York, son of Matthew. Trenyon was variously recorded as Trinian, Trynian, Myers, Myars, Miares, and Myeres throughout his life. He must have been very confused. Other records include Alice Myers, baptized in London in 1598, and the marriage of Thomas Myers and Ann Parkinson, recorded on 29 June 1609 at St. Nicholas Cole Abbey, London. The first recorded spelling of the family name is that of Herewardus le Mire, dated 1212 (The Berkshire Curia Rolls). Surnames became necessary when the government introduced personal taxation. In England, this was known as the poll tax. Over the centuries, surnames in all countries continued to "evolve," often creating surprising variants from the original spellings.
