Don't be fooled by Rod's slow intro - once this one kicks into gear, we're treated to my all-time favourite routine by the Pink Windmill Kids. I'm not sure why that is, but somehow it seems to encapsulate everything I always loved about the show just perfectly. The energy and enthusiasm are great, the two-part counter-melodies brilliant, some of the dance moves positively gymnastic... Great, pure, distilled stuff! I suppose, given the subject matter, it provides the perfect opportunity to give a big shout out to musical director Colin Campbell and choreographer Alan Harding - how much emptier so many childhoods would have been without them.
Simply called Songs, this was written by one Dennis Scott, and seems to have got its first airing on Sesame Street. More than once, in fact, but perhaps most famously by Crystal Gayle and Big Bird - many thanks to Jemma in the comments for helping me out there! The piece was later sung (believe it or not) by No-Longer-Little Jimmy Osmond in the TV series Fame, while this version was first broadcast on 16th March 1984 as part of Emu's World series five.
