The carved wood saints of Puerto Rico have their roots in the Spanish colonial era where all the religious statuary for churches had to be brought up from Europe. Local artisans-mostly self taught with humble carving tools- took to making these figures from indigenous woods; hence this folkloric gem/tradition was born. These “Santos” were filmed at an artisan fair in the main plaza of the town of Dorado, during a local festival on august 20, 2020.
