Tears, born of fear and relief, streamed down my cheeks as my mother enveloped me in her embrace. Yet, amidst the tumult of emotion, I remained silent, unwilling to utter a word of the unseen horror that had besieged me. It was as if the mere mention of its existence would beckon its return, a silent sentinel lurking in the shadows, ever vigilant, ever listening.
My mother settled into the vacant bunk, her reassuring presence a beacon of comfort amidst the lingering shadows of the night. Though her pledge to stand guard until morning assuaged my anxiety to some extent, sleep remained an elusive prospect, my restless mind stirred awake by intermittent rustles of bed sheets.
The following day dawned, a welcome reprieve from the confines of that narrow, stifling room. With Saturday's arrival came the promise of liberation, and I eagerly embraced the opportunity to flee the confines of our modest abode. The sprawling expanse of our backyard beckoned, its untamed foliage and towering sycamore tree offering sanctuary for childhood adventures. Despite the allure of outdoor escapades, my gaze frequently strayed to the unassuming window, a portal to the sinister realm that lurked within. Beneath the veneer of innocence, I sensed a malevolent presence, its gaze fixed upon me with malignant intent, biding its time until the cover of nightfall granted it dominion once more.
It may seem perplexing, but when evening descended and my parents led me back to that accursed room, I uttered no protest. Silently and resignedly, I ascended to the top bunk, a silent witness to my own impending dread. Though as an adult, I might recount this harrowing experience with fervent insistence, in my youth, I harbored doubts and fears that stifled my voice. Speaking its name felt perilous, as though acknowledgment might awaken the dormant fury of the unseen entity.
As darkness enveloped me on the second night, a palpable shift in the atmosphere heralded the unwelcome return of my nocturnal tormentor. With each ominous rustle of the bed sheets below, the word I had long suppressed clawed its way to the forefront of my consciousness, a chilling revelation that hung heavy in the air—“Ghost.”
As this realization dawned upon me, I observed a chilling cessation of movement from my uninvited guest. The bed sheets lay still, a deceptive veneer of calm concealing a far more grotesque reality. Beneath the shroud of darkness, a slow, rhythmic rasp of breath emanated from the unseen presence below. I could almost visualize its chest rising and falling with each labored exhale, each wheeze a sinister testament to its unsettling existence. Tremors of dread coursed through me, and I fervently prayed for its departure, for release from its menacing grip.
