In 2002, filmmaker Marjorie Sturm began filming a documentary about a rising San Francisco writer, JT LeRoy, a homeless, drug addicted, HIV-positive, transgender adolescent known for his powerful and raw prose. During filming, in 2005, a story was published in the New York Times that precluded to the fact that JT LeRoy was not who the public thought he was, but was actually a fictitious identity crafted by a woman named Laura Albert.
LeRoy's autobiographical tales of abuse as a young man became cult hits, beloved of celebrities from Asia Argento, Lou Reed to Winona Ryder. Shortly after the story was published Laura Albert came forward and confirmed that she had created this identity in order to get her writing published.
Albert felt that had she tried to publish as a thirty-something year old woman, the public would not have responded with much enthusiasm. Albert's husband's sister, Savannah Knoop, was recruited to play the role and serve as the public face of JT, the young writer in the early phases of gender reassignment, hence the feminine external appearance. This news clearly redirected the focus of the film.
Marjorie Sturm draws on a rich array of material to assemble this documentary feature that's fascinating on numerous levels. It's one of a handful of documentaries that is worth viewing more than once. This is a a fascinating look at how a controversial writer with zero empathy and average talent will use guilt, sympathy and lie upon lie to trick famous people in order to scratch out her way to the top of the shallow world of fashion hipsters.
