This year 2023 is a special year because.
1. the biblical and astronomical calendar of God and the inaccurate mathematical Jewish calendar fall on the same days at Passover.
2. the 14th of Nisan again falls on a Wednesday, the High Sabbath (15th of Nisan) on a Thursday, and the "first Sabbath" in the counting of the 7 Sabbaths until Pentecost again on the 17th of Nisan. This was also the case in the year Jesus was crucified:
14th Nisan: Wed, April 5, 2023
15th Nisan (High Sabbath): Thu, April 6
16th Nisan (Preparation Day): Fri. April 7
17th Nisan ("first Sabbath"): April 8
According to Leviticus 23, exactly 7 Sabbaths must be counted each year between Passover (15th Nisan) and Pentecost (50th day). Therefore, in the resurrection chapter of the NT, this "one of the Sabbaths" or "first of the Sabbaths" is literally mentioned several times (Mk 16:2; Lk 24:1; John 20:1). Jesus rose from the dead "early on the first Sabbath" (Mk 16:9). It could not be clearer. Sunday or the "first day of the week" is never mentioned, but only the "first Sabbath" (singular) or the "first of the Sabbaths" (plural) of a series of 7 Sabbaths until Pentecost.
Jesus was crucified on the 14th of Nisan at 9 am, suffered on the cross for 6 hours and died at 3 pm, exactly at the time when the Passover lambs were slaughtered. He thus fulfilled the sacrifice perfectly. Through His resurrection on a Sabbath, He became our Sabbath rest and fulfilled everything perfectly in this respect too.
