Alfred Zeisler's 1936 The Amazing Quest of Ernest Bliss, A.K.A. The Amazing Adventure, is a heart-warming British romantic comedy; unlike many rom-coms however this one is genuinely heartwarming and genuinely romantic; featuring great performances from Cary Grant as Ernest Bliss and Mary Brian as Francis Clayton.
Ernest Bliss is a millionaire entrepreneur who makes a bet with his doctor Lord Honiton (Henry Kendall) that he can live for a whole year without accessing any of the money he has inherited or gets from his companies, as he feels stuck in a rut. In the Great Depression (the mid 1930s to mid 1940s), this just isn't easy to do. Starvation looms, but by stepping from selling stoves to driving a cab Ernest manages to find happiness, an understanding of people's plights and marriage for love, not shiny things.
Ernest's and Francis's relationship is pleasantly well-developed and feels real; she doesn't even like him at the beginning. Also you get a tiny taste of the suckfest that was the global Great Depression and I can definitely see this giving poor people a much needed morale-boost (you know, if they can afford to even go the theatre to SEE it) and maybe it was intended to inspire rich people to be more generous and understanding to the poor.
So, if you're in the mood for something to cheer you up and make you feel amiable toward the world, this is a great movie for that very purpose.
