The BMW Group has completely declassified the new generation BMW 5 Series. The main novelty of the 8th generation model is the all-electric i5 version. Externally, the electric sedan can be distinguished only by the design of the radiator grille. The well-known classic body is preserved. True, with the change of generations, the five BMWs have increased in size.
The length of the sedan of the eighth generation is 5060 mm (+97 mm), width - 1900 mm (+32 mm), height - 1515 mm (+36 mm). The wheelbase has been increased by 20 mm to 2995 mm.
The electric sedan is available in two versions: rear-wheel drive i5 eDrive40 and all-wheel drive i5 M60 xDrive. The basic version is equipped with one 340 hp engine. (430 Nm) and traction battery for 81.2 kWh. The maximum speed is 193 km/h. Acceleration time from 0 to 100 km/h — 6.0 seconds. The range is 497–582 km in the WLTP measurement cycle.
While the exterior isn't a complete departure from the old model, the interior has been completely redesigned. BMW has implemented its dual-screen design, but with a twist, as the new 5 Series uses the iDrive 8.5 system shared with the recently introduced i7 M70.
The system promises to provide a more intuitive user interface with QuickSelect, which consists of grouped shortcuts on the main screen without the need to go into submenus. The screen size has not changed compared to other models, still offering a 12.3-inch driver display and a 14.9-inch touchscreen.
Also, the change of generations brought an expanded list of technologies to the BMW 5 Series. Among them is the new highway autopilot and active lane change assistant. The parking assistance system, including the reverse assistant, is declared as standard equipment. Thanks to the new BMW 8.5 operating system, games have appeared in the list of entertainment for the first time, but they can only be activated while parked.
The new BMW 5 Series will go on sale in August-September 2023. European prices have not yet been announced. In the US, the gasoline sedan will cost from $57,900, and the electric one will cost from $66,800.
