My name is Seia, and I’ve been playing the piano since I was 4; I recently achieved a distinction for my ARSM diploma. Additionally, I’ve been singing for almost 6 years being in the Singapore Symphony Children’s Choir from the ages of 9-13. After my voice broke, although I had already taken an interest in contemporary music, I started to fully focus on covers and a newly found interest in songwriting. I must say, songwriting completely opened up my perspective on music allowing me to discover the absurd variety of music (mostly due to my obsession with trying to spice up every new song I write). This desire to embellish my music to perfection, and the deeply rooted interest I had to find the best way in expressing this ethereal language of music is what led me into a journey of discovery. Firstly, by polishing up my music theory, and merging the skills I had acquired from the many years of my classical music studies. With a solid foundation, I’ve also taught myself the guitar by ear (which I can’t say is anywhere near as good as my piano skills but we’ll get there one day).
However, all this talk about technique and musical knowledge is meaningless without the understanding that skill is just a fraction of what it takes to create a piece of art. As I said, music is life. Simply, it’s almost an addiction. It’s an escape from the physical world, a void into which I can let my thoughts bleed out into without limit. However, it can be a void I find myself lost in, yet a place I can’t escape by will - again sometimes labelled by myself as an addition. But through this interconnected relationship I have with my instrument and my thoughts, I allow myself to fully empty my struggles or express pure joy through each and every musical artwork displayed. That’s music to me. It’s life – and that’s a life worth living.
