Many verses in the Quran point us directly to the virtue of gratitude. In particular, Quran 14:34 reminds us to take notice of all the provisions God has given us: “And he has granted you all that you asked Him for. If you tried to count God’s blessings, you would never be able to number them. Indeed humankind is truly unfair, totally ungrateful.”
One might wonder how it is that God has given us all our provisions, but we still feel we are in need. There is a tradition of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that explains that God can answer our prayers in unexpected ways: He can give us precisely what we ask for. He can save us from an affliction that we did not know. Lastly, he can save the reward of the supplication for the Hereafter. All of these replies show the benevolence of God. We should recognize these blessings in creation, contemplate them, and never be ungrateful to God.
