An inexpensive circuit board that cost about $25 was used by a Belgian security researcher to successfully attack the Starlink satellite-based internet infrastructure, which is run by SpaceX. He unveiled his attack at Black Hat.
In a talk titled "Glitched on Earth by Humans" at the annual ethical hacker conference this week, Lennert Wouters disclosed a voltage fault injection attack on a Starlink User Terminal (UT), or satellite dish people use to access the system, that allowed him to break into the dish and investigate the Starlink network from there.
A satellite dish that Wouters bought was physically disassembled before he built the unique board, or modchip, that can be connected to the Starlink dish.
A tweet previewing the presentation that he claimed was delivered through a rooted Starlink UT stated that he created the solution using inexpensive, off-the-shelf components and was able to utilize it to get root access by glitching the Starlink UT security operations center bootrom.
Wouters scanned the Starlink dish to build a design for the modchip that would fit over the existing Starlink board. According to the report, he attached the modchip using a few wires after soldering it to the Starlink PCB. The modchip is made up of a Raspberry Pi microprocessor, flash storage, electronic switches, and a voltage regulator.
Once it was affixed to the Starlink dish, the tool conducted a fault injection attack to momentarily short the system. This allowed Starlink's security measures to be bypassed, allowing Wouters to get access to the system's locked areas.
The first bootloader, which is the ROM bootloader that is burned onto the system-on-chip and cannot be modified, is the target of Wouters' assault, which exploits the bug. According to the report, he later put altered firmware on newer bootloaders, which granted him access over the dish.
Wouters said in a write-up about his presentation posted on the conference website that he first carried out the attack in a lab before implementing the modchip on the dish itself.
We are able to run arbitrary code thanks to our attack, which results in an irreparable compromise of the Starlink UT, according to Wouters. To freely traverse the Starlink network, it is necessary to be able to gain root access on the Starlink UT.
Once he had access to the system, Wouters was able to investigate the Starlink network and its communication linkages. He said that other researchers may expand on the study to investigate the Starlink ecosystem further.
Before making a public presentation on the problem, Wouters responsibly disclosed the vulnerability to SpaceX through their bug bounty program.
