This medieval surname is of great interest because of its biblical and 12th century crusader origins. They are conflated and have their origin in the Hebrew given name "Yaakov" as well as the personal name and subsequent surname Jacob. This was Latinized during the Roman period, first as Jacobus, and then as Jacomus in the period up to the 11th century, which was called the "Dark Ages". The actual meaning of the name Jacobus is also disputed. Traditionally, the name has been interpreted as deriving from "akev," meaning heel, but it has also been interpreted as "the supplanter." Both meanings are influenced by the biblical story of Esau and his twin brother Jacob. Jacob is said to have been born on Esau's heels and took advantage of Esau's hunger to convince him to give up his birthright "for a gobble"; from James, Jayume, and Jamie, to Giacomo, Comi, Comiam, Cominetto, Motto, and Gimson, There are a variety of spellings! The first records are found in England, as England was the first country to adopt and properly register both surnames. Early charters include Christiana Jemes of Cambridge, listed in the Hundred Rolls of 1279, and Lewis James, one of the first settlers of the Virginia Colony in the Americas, who left London on August 21, 1635. The first surname on record is Walter James. This was recorded under the reign of Henry XI from 1154 to 1189 with a date of 1187 in the Pipe Rolls of Gloucestershire County.
