An American research tank has concluded that Russia likely intends a mass evacuation from weak locations in the southern Kherson area to prevent a "devastating setback" in Ukraine, given Kyiv's counteroffensive advancement.
According to the Institute for the Study of War, since Moscow expects potential Ukrainian gains in Kherson, it is likely establishing circumstances for the removal of "military and occupying forces" along the western bank of the Dnieper River.
In recent weeks, Ukrainian forces have pushed forward with a counteroffensive in an area captured by Russian troops in the early stages of the conflict. Since early September, Kyiv has reclaimed towns along the western bank of the Dnieper River.
Meanwhile, Russian authorities, presenters, and guests on Russian state television seem to be bracing residents for terrible news as Kyiv's counteroffensive intensifies.
Wednesday marked the beginning of the departure of citizens and pro-Russian officials from Kherson, with authorities stating that they want to move between 50,000 and 60,000 people to the banks of the Dnieper River within a week.
Citing unverified reports from Telegram accounts based in Kherson city, it was stated that Russian forces disbanded and looted a fire station and transported fire trucks, stolen civilian cars, and other household items across the Dnieper River to Hola Prystan, another city in the Kherson region.
Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty's Ukrainian station reported on Thursday that Russian soldiers are now shifting military equipment from the Dnieper River in response to recent Ukrainian advances.
