Glaciers in northwestern China melting at a ‘shocking’ rate and may disappear by 2050

Glaciers in China’s Qilian mountains in the northwestern province of Gansu are melting at an extremely fast rate. Experts say that over the last 15 years, one of the glaciers, the Laohugou No 12 glacier, has shrunk by over 150m (492ft), accelerated by global warming and rising temperatures. Scientists predict the glaciers in the 800km (500mile) chain of mountains at the edge of Tibetan plateau could completely disappear by 2050. The glacial melt and a lack of snowfall could in turn lead to more desertification, affecting agriculture in the region.
