Foreigners in China join army of online live-streamers to sell Chinese products around the world

China’s live-stream retail market is projected to grow to be worth 961 billion yuan (US$145 billion) in 2020, up from 433.9 billion yuan the previous year, according to iiMedia Research. The increase has been linked to a surge in online activity during the coronavirus pandemic. But Chinese retailers are eager to expand their businesses beyond the country and are hiring multilingual foreigners living in China to approach customers abroad. Lalo Lopez from Spain, a resident of China for about nine years, was approached by a Beijing marketing firm to live-stream every evening and interact with potential Spanish-speaking buyers of products ranging from hairdryers to windbreakers. In China, live-streaming has become a natural extension of online shopping particularly during the country’s biggest discount period of the year, “Singles’ Day”. The annual November 11 sales event has become an indicator of consumer sentiment in the world's second-largest economy.
