Woah, how did we get here already?! Number 30 of our traditional outdoor games summer challenge - the much loved classic Hide And Seek. Hide and Seek - The History Of The Game It is believed that the game hide and seek originated from a Greek game called "apodidraskinda". Hide and Seek - How To Play You need at least 2 players to play this game. One player is the "seeker" and has to count to a set number whilst the other person hides. This number can be 10 if you are playing with younger children or 20 if they are older and more aware of their numbers. Once the counter counts to the required number they then go looking for the "hider". This can be particularly fun if you are playing somewhere outside where there are trees or logs or different things to hide behind. Once found or "caught" the hider then takes a turn at being a "seeker" and so the game begins over. It is a great game for all ages (even adults) and encourages turn taking and numeracy skills. Stick games are common in many different cultures. The game of Pick-up-sticks, Spilikins or Mikado is thought to originate from China before spreading to Japan and across Europe. Many early sets of sticks were made if ivory or bone and imported from China. A traditional Pick-up-stick set consists of 31 coloured sticks. One stick is different to the others. The 'mikado' or emperor stick. Once collected, it can be used to aid the player in picking up their next sticks. The different colours represent different values or points. The winner is the player who has the sticks of the highest value. This was all a little too complicated to master for our Rain-shine team. We made our own simplified game using some disposable kebab sticks. You could also use tooth picks, drinking straws, or a bundle of twigs. We took turns to pick up a stick. If anyone noticed the other sticks moving, the player missed a go. The winner to our game was simply the person who accumulated the most sticks. This is a great game for concentration and coordination. It takes a bit of skill to collect those sticks without wobbling the pile. We also got some good counting practice trying to work out who was the winner at the end. Games do not need annoying battery operated sounds or garish multicoloured plastic to be attractive to children. A simple pile of sticks turned into a very competitive challenge that had everyone wanting to join in. Nobody wanted to make those sticks wobble. Why not try making your own game today? This summer we have been trying out loads of fun traditional children's games. Many of the games we have tried have a competitive element and require one player to take on the vital role of 'it'. Every game of tig, rounders, dodge ball or Olly octopus requires a vital selection process. In some games like Duck, duck goose, everybody wants to be 'it', but in others games such as Piggie in the middle, being 'it' is not so much fun. Our Rain-shine team like to figure out the selection process by the traditional 'toes in' method. All the players place one foot in the circle. They chant a rhyme, and by gradual elimination, the owner of the final foot is the chosen one. Here's the rhymes we use. Maybe you know some more? "Micky mouse is in his house, Pulling down his trousers, What colour are his pants?" "Eeny, meeny, miny, moe, Catch a tigger by the toe. If he squeals, let him go, Eeny, meeny, miny, moe." It's not good enough for an adult to create an order, or select a child. Being 'it' is all part of the game. It's something the children need to settle between themselves in a language that is fair and widely understood. Choosing who is 'it' is a serious business. It's almost a whole other game in itself. Children need to learn to negotiate, take turns, and test out leadership roles. Who's 'it' today? Let the kids decide! This summer our Rain-shine team have been trying out some traditional children's games. The kids were rather skeptical about learning many of the rhymes and activities, many of which were unfamiliar to our young team. In a world full of TV and computerised toys, the simplicity of more traditional forms of entertainment made the children hesitant. When they got started and really started to participate they were all surprised by how much fun these 'old-fashioned' games could be. Clapping games are a great way to get children playing together without the need for competition. They help with both communication and coordination. Getting the moves right is actually quite challenging and requires good teamwork to get to the end of the rhyme. The girls really didn't want to make this video. That is, until they had a rather amusing adult demonstration and a few minutes to practice. In the end, clapping was loads of fun and they were soon challenging each other to sing the rhyme in different ways. The wobbly bridge was the girls idea and certainly added a new dimension to their game. Learning something new can be daunting and it's easy to reject an idea as 'boring' rather than give it a go. Our girls had a great sense of achievement when they mastered their clapping rhyme. Maybe it's time to challenge your kids to try something new? What clapping rhymes do you know?
