18:: The Black Sabbath Riffs That Were The Blueprint for Metal
01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 02.10.2023 · 21:12:57 ··· ··· ··· ··· ··· ··· There's no doubt Black Sabbath have inspired countless metal musicians to pick up a guitar and start a band.
Through many, many episodes of Gear Factor, we've heard shredder after shredder say the same thing. The first song they learned? The band that made them want to play in the first place? Their favorite riffs? The metal architects Black Sabbath.
See artists from Steel Panther's Satchel and High on Fire's Matt Pike to Dream Theater's John Petrucci and Gus G, plus many more, playing iconic Black Sabbath riffs.
Hear the iconic riffs that inspired countless guitar player to learn how to play the instrument in the first place.
Black Sabbath are the undisputed godfathers of heavy metal. Beginning with their eponymous debut and seminal sophomore LP, ‘Paranoid’ (both released in 1970), the quartet from Birmingham, England, coalesced the scattered contributions of numerous bands (from Blue Cheer to Led Zeppelin) into the powerful, uncompromising and surprisingly malleable style we recognize today.
After a succession of influential albums, Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi, bassist Geezer Butler and drummer Bill Ward parted ways with singer Ozzy Osbourne in 1979, and, for a brief time, enjoyed nearly as much success with former Rainbow vocalist Ronnie James Dio, at the helm.

19:: Is Metal Better Off Because Metallica Fired Dave Mustaine?
01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 22.09.2023 · 15:40:48 ··· ··· ··· ··· ··· ··· When Dave Mustaine was infamously fired from Metallica it impacted the future of metal music forever.
If you know you have to end a business partnership with someone, what responsibility do you bear to treat them right as you show them the door? Maybe they’re not pulling their weight, maybe their behavior is too unpredictable, maybe you just straight up don’t like them. Is the onus on you to be fair and to give plenty of warning before you kick them to the curb, or is it better to just rip the bandaid off?
In 1983, a young Metallica was finally getting traction. They had just signed their first record deal and were now touring across the country, but between bandmates, things weren’t as peachy.
The resulting actions would go on to not only have a huge impact on the lives of all four members but also metal music as a whole.

20:: Pantera Tell The Story of 'Vulgar Display of Power' [Full Documentary]
01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 15.09.2023 · 17:21:55 ··· ··· ··· ··· ··· ··· On Feb. 25, 2017, Loudwire released this three-part documentary marking the 25th anniversary of Pantera's Vulgar Display of Power. Now you can watch the documentary in full where Pantera tell the story in their own words.
As part of our Loudwire Legacy series, we examined the album that many credit for saving heavy metal during a transitional time for the genre. The documentary features interviews with all three (at the time) surviving members of Pantera (Philip Anselmo, Vinnie Paul and Rex Brown), the album's producer, Terry Date, and the album's cover art photographer Brad Guice.
Also featured are metal luminaries Mike Portnoy, Slayer's Kerry King, Megadeth's Dave Mustaine and David Ellefson, Korn's Brian 'Head' Welch, Black Label Society's Zakk Wylde and several others, all professing their admiration of Vulgar Display of Power and the impact it had on heavy metal.
The documentary is divided into three parts: 'The Making Of,' 'The Impact' and 'The Secret Story,' with the last one debunking a long-running urban legend about the iconic image on the album's cover.
This documentary on the untold story of 'Vulgar Display of Power' was filmed before Vinnie Paul died in June of 2018. Rest In Peace to the Abbott brothers.

21:: Guitarists Shred the Metallica Riffs That Made Them
01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 08.09.2023 · 18:43:22 ··· ··· ··· ··· ··· ··· There's no doubt Metallica have inspired countless musicians to pick up a guitar and start a band.
Through many, many episodes of Gear Factor, we've heard shredder after shredder say the same thing. The first song they learned? The band that made them want to play in the first place? Their favorite riffs? The mighty Metallica, of course.
That's why we decided to revisit a multitude of players, from Ghost's Tobias Forge to GWAR's Pustulus Maximus, gushing about the Metallica riffs that inspired them to learn to play and even want to start a band in the first place.
Formed in Los Angeles, in 1981, before relocating to San Francisco two years later, Metallica helped both spearhead and define the thrash metal genre. In the ‘90s, they embraced more accessible sounds and new compositional styles that took them to new heights.
One song that many guitarist say they first learned is "Seek and Destroy" from 1983's Kill 'Em All. And, of course, you'll hear a lot of "Master of Puppets" from their 1986 album of the same name and, perhaps their most well-known song, "Enter Sandman" from their eponymous 1991 album. If you're new, Subscribe! → http://bit.ly/subscribe-loudwire

Well, a rise in strange and dark crimes across America led to a Satanic Panic — and politicians were looking for a scapegoat. Watch this mini documentary to learn more about the Satanic Panic of the 1980s, why everyone was so afraid of heavy metal, how musicians responded and the censorship of music that followed.
In the mid 1980’s, a war against heavy metal began. Music deals in metaphors, euphemisms, symbolism, and hyperbole. A lot of songs have dark, twisted, even evil lyrics, but the meaning in those lyrics are often intentionally vague. Where is the line between protecting children from harmful messages and outright censorship?
A committee called the Parents Music Resource Center, or PMRC, took a case to the United States Senate with hopes in censoring any record they dubbed “P*** Rock,” by stamping Parental Advisory labels on them. And so America watched as another debate over the interpretation of the 1st Amendment unfolded.
Watch to find out who really won in the end.

40:: Amazingly Unforgettable Dave Grohl Moments
01.01.1970 · 01:00:00 ··· 01.05.2023 · 14:18:58 ··· ··· ··· ··· ··· ··· What are the most unforgettable and best Dave Grohl moments?
Here's to one of rock's real life superheroes, the ever-memorable, totally unforgettable #DaveGrohl. Who could ever get enough of this guy?!
What could ever be cooler than being cast as the metal-loving devil in Tenacious D in the Pick of Destiny? As you'll see in this Loud List, getting into the full costume and makeup was no easy task and required a lot of patience and dedication from Grohl. It made for one of the most iconic scenes in rock and metal related movies though, so it all seems pretty worth it.
Going from devil to troll — a fun-loving prankster, not the under-the-bridge creature — Grohl and the rest of the Foos famously had some fun antagonizing the intolerant, exceptionally right wing Westboro Baptist Church Christian extremist group, with a full band rig rolling by in the bed of a truck as they played music by everybody's favorite disco act, the Bee Gees.
Giving back is also important to Grohl, who playfully engaged with youngster drummer and viral sensation Nandi Bushell in a series of challenges.

Metallica emerged in the '80s as one of metal's brightest new stars. The upstart rock band consisted of singer/guitarist James Hetfield, guitarist Kirk Hammett, drummer Lars Ulrich and bassist Cliff Burton and these "four horsemen" rode to the top of the metal genre on the strength of the 'Kill 'Em All', 'Ride the Lightning' and 'Master of Puppets' albums.
But on Sept. 27, 1986, in the midst of a European tour, tragedy struck as Burton was killed in a bus crash.
In this mini Metallica documentary we look at some lingering questions about the legendary bassist. What was it that Cliff Burton added to the band? And why is it that to this day, there’s a moniker among Metallica fans toward the four-string shredder …Metallica’s secret weapon.
