В 1879 году народниками Николай Морозов и Дмитрий Клеменец была написана песня «Тайное собрание», посвященная репрессиям против «Земли и воли» (массовыми, иногда абсурдными обысками и арестами в ночь на 25 февраля 1879 г. в Харькове после убийства губернатора Д.Н. Кропоткина и 14 марта 1879 г. в Петербурге после покушения на шефа жандармов Дрентельна). В ней нет ни слова о Николае Втором, зато упоминается инициировавший обыски генерал А.Р. Дрентельн. Позже, в эпоху революции 1905-1907 годов, появился новый вариант этой песни под названием «Митя Трепов-генерал». Как несложно догадаться, в ней появляется вместо Дрентельна Д.Ф. Трепов — обер-полицмейстер Москвы, а затем Петербурга (1904 — 1906 гг.). Основная тема песни (обыски) сохранена, но впервые появляются знаменитые строки: «По России слух пошел – Николай с ума сошел». Песня была популярна среди студентов, а к 1905 году распространилась и среди рабочих.

In 1879, the Narodniks (from organization called "Narodnaya Volya" — "People's Will") Nikolai Morozov and Dmitry Klemenets wrote the song "Secret Assembly", dedicated to the repression against "Land and Will" (mass, sometimes absurd searches and arrests on the night of February 25, 1879 in Kharkov after the assassination of the governor D.N. Kropotkin and on March 14, 1879 in St. Petersburg after the assassination attempt on the chief of the gendarmes Drenteln). It does not mention Nicholas II, but mentions General A.R. Drenteln, who initiated the searches. Later, during the revolution of 1905-1907, a new version of this song appeared under the title "Mitya Trepov the General". As it is easy to guess, in it appears instead of Drenteln D.F. Trepov - Oberpolitsmeister of Moscow and then St. Petersburg (1904 - 1906). The main theme of the song (searches) is retained, but the famous lines appear for the first time: "A rumor went around Russia - Nikolai has gone mad". The song was popular among students, and by 1905 it had spread among workers.
